My Child

My child, I love you more than anything else in this world.
I fell in love with you long before I met you.
I gave up everything so I could be at your beck and call.
I laboured and toiled so that you would want for nothing.
When you were little, you would rush to meet me as I got home,
Filled me in on all the happenings of the day,
Told me stories, true and those made up.
Before falling asleep, I would kiss you and pray that you have all
the best out of life.

You came to me in tears.
You had found that he who had claimed to love you was false.
My heart went out to you, and I sent a silent prayer that you be
healed.
And that in time, you meet another who is loving and faithful.
You found the perfect partner that I had wished for you.
Your soulmate. I sensed between you a love so true and strong.
I watched as you exchanged vows and got married.
My eyes were filled with tears of joy as I wished for you love and
happiness.

You had to go away to start your own family.
It was so far away; I would not be able to see you for many a
day.
My days would be empty, but memories of you would light up
my nights.
I wished upon a star that you stay safe until that time we would
meet again.

Now that I am old and weak, my child, will you come to me?
Will you be kind to me and care for me, even when I may not
remember you?
Will you come to me and talk to me, even when my words may
be jumbled and not make sense?
Will you let me reminisce, and will you fill the gaps when I
forget?

Will you remember all my favourite things and keep them close
to me?
Will you remember how I was and how I preferred things?
Will you love me then as I have always loved you?
Will you remember that, even if I may not say so, I love you
more than anything else in this world.
