The Pink Pen

When my sister was in primary school, she and her friends were bullied by one of their classmates. The boy who bullied them was massive in size. Almost twice the size of my sister. He frightened and bullied those in senior classes too. Even some prefects were afraid of him. Almost all the school children were afraid of him. The teachers did not know because he had promised horrible repercussions to anyone that dared to report him. All the school children were silenced and endured a life of terror and abuse. My sister never said a thing to me nor our parents. I should have guessed something was amiss because my sister had changed. Gone was that sister who used to burst out laughing out of the blues. She had lost her spark and dragged her feet as if she did not want to go to school. No longer did she hold her head high but walked with eyes down to the ground. Sometimes she seemed to be crying if no one was watching. My dad asked had her if everything was alright. She said it was. I asked her about the pink pen that she had received from Santa at Christmas. She told me she had lost it.

I only came to know about her predicament and that of her friends after an unfortunate encounter. As I was walking home a tall boy the size of a big man stood in front of me. He demanded that I kiss him or else he would not let me pass. My sister’s two friends who happened to be nearby started calling out to him. Whatever it was they said seemed to frighten him. Immediately he turned around and ran. I was interested as to what had frightened him. They informed me that he was afraid of my sister. They had just informed him that if he hurt me in any way they would report him to her. They went on to tell me of how he had terrorised almost the whole school until my sister put a stop to it. They went on to describe how it happened.

My sister had sat oblivious to the noise. Her head bent as she was concentrating on reading. She did not hear nor notice as the bully stealthy walked towards her. He had a grin on his face as he approached. The other pupils watched in horror unsure of his intentions. He held in his hand the pink pen Santa had given to my sister. When he was within arm’s length, he directed the pen into my sisters ears and all hell broke loose. My sister was startled, she jumped up screaming. She raised her hands as she stood and a finger made contact with the bully’s eye blinding him temporarily. The bully was caught unaware, raised his arms as he slipped and landed on his back. Angry and frustrated he rushed up too quickly and landed on all his four limbs. He tried to stand up too quickly but barely made it. He slid and landed on his back once more. He was either hurt or the anger had gone out of him, so he just laid on the ground. Unable to move. As if on cue scores of pupils rushed towards him. In no time at all they were upon him punching, kicking and spitting. The prefects walked lackadaisically towards the scene, took their time. They left it for a moment or so before dispensing the situation.

My sister picked up her pink pen that Santa had given her and walked away. That was my sister’s version anyway.  I was informed otherwise. I was informed by her friends that when the bully got close to her she acted like ‘Super woman’. According to them, just as the Bully approached her  she turned suddenly punching him straight the face with her elbow. He fell backwards.  When he tried to stand up my sister punched him in the belly, and he landed on all of his four limbs.  He had tried to stand once more but my sister had kicked his shin and he landed on his back. At that point the entire school landed on him kicking, spitting and screaming.

Well, the Bully has his own version. He says my sister is possessed by evil spirits. My sister does not deny it. Takes advantage of the situation. She just corrects him and tells him that she has ‘Jesus spirits’  and that she will let them loose on him if he bullies anyone ever again. As of her, my sister shines brightly again. She walks to school happily with her head held high. Carries the pink pen in the front pocket of her school blazer.
